Common Good?

We are people working in the built environment across the North of England who see a need to challenge current systems for developing our towns and cities.

We want to improve the processes that deliver urban change, raising the quality of the everyday environment, and using our skills and networks to engage a broader range of people in the definition and pursuit of the common good.

Our purpose - to achieve positive change in northern towns and cities - is built on our values:

Authenticity

Openness
Responsibility
Honesty
Trust
Accountability

Joy

Humour
Love
Fun
Curiosity
Freedom

Ambition

Vision
Progressive
Impactful

Equity

Balance
Fairness
Community

Our events are additive:
we do not replicate what others are doing but support existing local initiatives in pursuit of our purpose, for the benefit of all.

We provide platforms for analysis and discussion, for learning and for the development of a common understanding of society’s issues, wants and needs.

To provide opportunities for practitioners to share knowledge and experiences outside of their regular professional groups/bubbles, to talk to different audiences, and to learn from different communities.

The overarching objectives are:

To provide opportunities for people to become engaged in key decisions that will impact their places and communities, to learn about the opportunities/need for change, and to provide decision-makers and their advisors with a deeper understanding of their places and communities.

We believe that everything in the system needs to be open to review and change, and that to review everything, we need everyone.

We’re a not-for-profit group of volunteers acting together in a thought-leadership and enabling role, not beholden to any employer or sponsor.

Views expressed are therefore those of individuals in accordance with the core objective of the Group: to give a platform for individuals to learn, educate, inform, question and debate the impacts caused by the creation/adaptation of places on everyone’s quality of life. Whilst we may work with a range of partners to enable events the direct promotion of employers or sponsors is prohibited. It is the Group’s aim that all events and publications shall be fully accessible and affordable to all, and are delivered with minimum detriment to the environment.
